Wedding Dress Alterations: Costs, Timeline, and What to Expect

Bridal dress alterations in progress at the Sherman Oaks atelier

Nearly every wedding dress — off the rack or sample sale — needs alteration to fit the way it should. As an atelier that both creates couture gowns and alters gowns from any designer, here is our straight answer on what bridal alterations cost, how long they take, and what “good” looks like.

What bridal alterations cost

At our Sherman Oaks atelier, alteration pricing falls into clear tiers. Final pricing is always confirmed after a consultation, based on the garment's complexity:

  • Basic alterations — hemming $40–$80+, strap adjustments $25–$50+, taking in or letting out $40–$90+
  • Formal & evening wear — dress resizing $80–$180+, zipper replacement $60–$120+, restyling from $100+
  • Bridal — basic bridal alterations $150–$400+, full bridal package $400–$900+, custom redesign or major changes from $500+

Why bridal alterations cost more

A wedding gown is engineered differently from any other garment: layered skirts, boned bodices, delicate laces and trains mean a simple “hem” can involve five layers finished by hand. Couture-trained hands matter here — the same techniques that construct our bespoke gowns are used to alter yours, whoever made it.

When to book

Book alteration work as soon as your gown arrives, and plan fittings so the final one falls close to the wedding, when your measurements are current. Standard work is typically completed within one to two weeks; comprehensive bridal packages with multiple fittings need two to four. If time is short, our speed tailoring service handles rush work — same-week and, when the schedule allows, same-day on straightforward jobs. Call ahead for rush availability.

Can you alter a dress bought from another store or designer?

Yes — we alter gowns from any designer or store, applying the same couture construction standards used on our own pieces.

A bustle gathers your train off the floor after the ceremony so you can move and dance freely. Most gowns with trains benefit from one; it's created during alterations and priced within your package.
