The Custom Wedding Dress Timeline: How Far Ahead Should You Order?

The four phases of a commission

Every gown at OT Haute Couture moves through the same four acts:

• Private consultation — you share your vision, images, fabrics and silhouettes; measurements are taken and your order begins
• Design & proposal — sketches, fabric swatches and a full breakdown of your gown, refined together before a single stitch is sewn
• Creation & fittings — the gown is cut, constructed and hand-finished, shaped to your body across typically two to three fittings
• Final delivery — your completed gown is pressed, steamed and presented, with styling guidance so you wear it with confidence

When to start

For a comfortable experience, begin consultations five to eight months before your wedding: that allows the full 8–16 week production window, unhurried fittings, and margin for life's surprises. Ordering earlier is never a problem — your production window is simply scheduled closer to your date so measurements stay accurate.

If your date is closer than that, don't rule out couture. Rush commissions may be possible at an additional charge, subject to the atelier's schedule — the only way to know is to ask. Tell us your date at first contact and we'll assess feasibility honestly.

What affects the timeline most

Three factors stretch or compress a gown's schedule: fabric sourcing (specialty Italian tulles and laces are procured per commission), embellishment density (hand-beading is measured in weeks, not days), and fitting availability (each fitting is an in-person appointment at the Los Angeles atelier — plan around travel if you're coming from outside the city).
